I have Merida Matts 5, a recreational level mountain bike that cost me almost RM1500. For the past 3 weeks I have been cycling almost everyday. Most of the time with my wife and neighborhood friends. Recently I followed few friends to Jabor estate for an offroad experience. And this very morning I managed to cycled up the 200m Bukit Pelindung (of course with great difficulty).
Now I am hooked to be more serious in biking and has decided to upgrade to a full suspension mountain bike. The problem is…which brand? I was initially offered another Merida, Merida TFS One-Twenty 700. A good bike actually but not as impressive as Giant Anthem X3 or Trek Fuel EX 5. Many friends said that Merida produce a mediocre frame, and the brand is just a hype rather than a true good brand. I went to see one cycling coach who told me that if I were to buy a Merida, buy Ninety-Six model. But he said the price is circa RM12K. Erk!!
So Merida was out of the question……but after few readings, I realized that Merida is a second biggest bike manufacturer in the world after Giant. And it owns Specialized. They also have their winning team, the Multivan Merida Biking Team. And…I believe one most important consideration is after sale support. For the last factor, a stable big shop is preferred, hence finally I decided to buy another Merida. Ann, the boss, offered to buy back my old Matts at a good price. And it is way below RM10K. So now I am a proud owner of Merida Ninety-Six HFS 100 1000D.
