Garmin XT on my E71
I already gave a link to the site that explains how to install Garmin XT to compatible Nokia phone in the previous posting. However let me summarise the steps for you guys.
- Get these files:
- Get your desired map. For Malaysia, I recommend getting it free & legal from MFM. Download & follow the instruction. Get the gmapsupp.img file ready. You can also obtain free & legal Indonesian map. Just google for it but then rename it as gmapsup2.img. Save it in your PC first.
- Then connect your phone to your PC in mass storage mode. Install all files in Para 1 with same order. I installed mine in the memory card, to save some space for the phone memory. I hope you know the consequence of having apps in the memory card instead of the phone memory
- Transfer the maps to the same Garmin folder either in your phone memory or your memory card.
- Disconnect your phone from PC. Now using your File Manager in your phone, find GarminMobileXT.sis file from the root folder (/Garmin) or maybe in the root folder of the memory card (/). Therefore make sure you remember where did you installed your apps to.
- Put all your desired maps into /Garmin too. But remember that not all maps are free. If it is not free, you must get the key when you bought it. Else…again, ask Mr Google *wink* IINM Garmin XT can support up to 4 maps. Gmapbmap.img is already available & its the world base map. So don’t delete that. Or if you have more than one map, you can combine them all into one gmapsupp.img using sendmap or gmaptool (please Google for it).
- Once Garmin Mobile XT has been installed run it from /Menu/Installations/GMobileXT. It will prompt you for a 8 digit key (you will have this number if you bought it), else you can only use GMobileXT paired with a bluetooth GPS. So guys, go & buy the app for you to have the key…. (please don’t ask me for the keygen because I will not going to do that….Mr Google might have it tho’) *evil grin*.
- Once done, enable the built-in GPS at /Settings/System/Remote GPS. Select ‘Use Attached/Built-in GPS’. Enable and it’s all done.

Updates
Latest Garmin Mobile XT software as of 11th March 2009 is version 5.00.20. Info about the improvements from v.20 to v.30 to v.40 is available here. But I don’t want to try it yet.

on my e71 I need to waith…about 10min to get the gps signal, I don’t know why, is this a software problem or hardware?

Make sure you set your GPS mode to assisted GPS & it will also depend on your network carrier. I am not sure best setting tho because with Malaysia Celcom, I just need to activate the A-GPS. The rest works well even while roaming.

th5am, it depends on what you had installed. I have 4GB minSD. With Garmin XT, Malaysian & Indonesian maps plus few software & some songs or multimedia files, I only used 1.2GB.
Just wondering how you were conned?

if its memory card issue, i remembered that a friend of mine had bought a huge memory card from china. when you view from windows, it states 16 GB but in reality, it only allow you to put in half or a quarter of that. So becareful my friend.

manchurr, you can download Garmin Mobile XT & install it to your smartphone or PDA. But to use the built-in GPS in your smartphone, you need the serial number (code), else you need to have a bluetooth GPS receiver.
Illegal or cracked Garmin XT is a totally different story.

I have thai map which is currently installed and working fine on my E71. I want to add another map. Have copied it to the garmin directory with the name gmpsupp1.img. Somehow can’t find it when I open GmobileXT. Help ? Do I need to combine the 2 maps together ? I tried the cgpsmapper.exe but it sure is very unfriendly to non techie like me. Any help ?

Hi Win, have you tried to rename it as gmapsup2.img? Please try this first & then you can check the availability of the map from Tools > Manage my data > Map Sets. Hope that helps.

Hi Ong, have you enable the built-in GPS as per Step #7? Usually if my friends encountered problem with installation, I asked them to remove everything & do it all over again. In your case if you already enabled the GPS but still Garmin is not able to detect any GPS receiver, I don’t know what to advise you as I never had such experience before.

Dear Ong, to use Garmin Mobile XT with the built in GPS, you need to get the software registered. Yes, you’ll get the code with the purchase of the software. I will not post illegal ways to obtain the code here. Please Google for it.
Regarding 3G sign, its because I subscribe to 3G plan. Therefore I am able to use its internet connection because for a A-GPS like E71, it requires internet connection to fix the coordinate.

Hi thanks for the guide. I can install garmin xt successfully… but i have 1 problem. When i go to poi or do a search. The result always show me the first character of every words. for exp, maybank gelugor, the search result only show me M G. how i know M G is actually maybank gelugor. Then KFC Q P P is for KFC queenbaymall pulau pinang. really hard for me to guess le. Do you have the same problem? or do i need to do some setting??

Dah letak no siri? Kalau beli original memang dapat no siri tu. Kalau tak, memang tak boleh guna GPS yg built-in dalam E71.

salam..everytime i jump to ‘where to?’ the garmin will appear ‘awaiting better GPS accuracy’.is that mean i can’t receive GPS signal from remote area, (Bukit Larut)

Nope…it can’t be. As long as there is open space….your GPS should be able to get the satellite signal. Check whether you have enabled the built-in GPS.

saya dah install garmin dan guna built in E71 GPS. tapi tetap dapat maklumbalas “awaiting better GPS accuracy”. tak pernah dapat guna menu GO! balik2 asyik searching GPS information.kat open space pun sama. adakah mmg kena libatkan line interenet juga.tak ke GPS ni free of charge?
sebab selalu garmin akan aktifkan line internet ( celcom prepaid saya ).
tolong selesaikan masalah saya ye.teringin nak try garmin dalam E71 saya..heheh.

Rizal, sebab paling common adalah Garmin XT anda tidak berlesen. Oleh itu pastikan anda telah mendapatkan lesen yang sah & dimasukkan ke dalam Garmin anda.

salam.. saya dah install garmin xt kat kedai .. so far sy pakai sumer okay jer.. sy nak tanya kalau lah 1 hari sy punya micro sd nak kena format n sy nak re-install garmin xt. kat mana sy nak dapatkan serial number sy.. sebab skang nie sy ada “unlock ESN” 10 digit… kalau nak g balik kat kedai yg sy install software nie jauh sgt.. kat pahang.. sy kat selangor.. ada sapa2 tau x camner nak carik serial number kat software garmin xt ni?

Saya dah install garmin mobile xt Version 5.00.40s60.9. Saya dah unlock ESN. Tapi yang menjadi masalahnya bila saya nak menggunakan GPS ni, dia tak detact GPS mcm biasa walaupun saya dah enable use attached/built-in GPS. Asyik2 dia minta saya on kan bluetooth ja. Bila check kat about garmin, software ni dah unlock dah. Tp bila check kat GPS information, dia tak detact unit id dan dok searching ja. Berjam-jam tunggu tp tetap takbleh detact GPS. Mcm mana nak selesaikan masalah ni?

Cuma perlu ikut arahan pada Para 2 & 3 di atas.
Dapatkan map dari samada Malsingmap atau Malfreemap, kemudian copy gmapsupp.img ke dalam folder Garmin dalam kad E71 anda. Itu sahaja.

Straight forward sebenarnya nak install Garmin XT ni.
But make sure ada serial number tu ready. Tu penting.
Masa install 3 file utama tu make sure connect as Storage mode. BUKAN PC Suite.
Pastu bubuh maps yg berkenaan dalam folder Garmin.
Run sis file, isi no siri yg diminta & walla….siap.

I think you need to uninstall Garmin XT from E71 using Apps Manager, delete all the files (the whole /Garmin folder) & do everything again. And please make sure to do everything step by step as written in the blog. Do not copy the files from someone else but do clean download & install. I experienced problems when using my very own installation files copied directly to my friend’s µSD.

emy, connect your phone in Mass Storage mode. Then using your PC, execute all the installation files & put them all in your preferred destination in your phone. Can be either in the card or phone.
