Genting Highland – Finally I did it!

Climbing is never my strength. Whether by foot or bicycle. But yesterday I got the opportunity to Genting Highland, one of the toughest bicycle climb in Malaysia. And I did it. Not with a good timing but I did it.

Why climbing Genting is so special? Because from Goh Tong Jaya roundabout to the top, the road is private. Own by Genting. So they don’t allow cyclist to cycle up their road due to some nasty accident last time. Only during Le Tour de Langkawi they allow cyclist to ride and I had a great moment & chats with the policemen.

The four of us drive from Kuantan as early as 4AM. We reached Genting Sempah R&R at about 6:30AM. Performed fajar prayer, changed into our jersey & had the breakfast. Met many friends there. At about 8:30AM we started the climb. The first 2KM was already very tough for me & I was worried that I might not even reach Goh Tong! Then my friend told me that I was using big chainring! Oh…..maybe someone changed the gear when testing my bike at Genting Sempah.

Once I used my 34T, I can climb comfortably until the temple! Starting from that switchback, my speed dropped tremendously & I stopped many times. My heart maintained at high rate. Nevertheless, finally I reached the summit. But I need to climb few more & had to walked the bike down some dangerous descend to reach First World Hotel.

Thank to Roslan who volunteered to drive the car because none of use would want to cycle down.

Overall, it was indeed a great experience and I would like to repeat it again next year.

The interstate ride. Our very own version

I was inspired by PCC Interstate that I joined last year from Kajang to Kuala Pilah to Muar to Johor Baharu. So I decided to have our own version. A shorter distance was covered in just 2 days from Kuantan to Desaru. Eight of us from Kuantan together with around another 7 riders from Maran Cycling Club (majority juniors) started the journey from Kuantan at about 8:15AM. My original plan was to stop only at Nenasi, but since many had not had their breakfast, we stopped at Pekan. We reached Nenasi at about 12:30 afternoon. After 30-45 minutes there, we continued the ride to Rompin. We were crusing slowly at around 30-32 kmh allowing some juniors to keep up. In Rompin, we had our lunch, solat & even a quick shower. The next 50KM was fun especially after Endau where the road was rolling instead of the 130KM super flat previously. We stopped at La Bella Resort in Air Papan, Mersing forthe night.

On Day 2, we started the journey along the scenic road of Air Papan, took our breakfast and immediately after Mersing town the tougher route started! It was a never ending rolling from Mersing to Sedili. Few Johor friends, helped us. We can’t thank enough Joe from Joeleney Bike and others for the assistance. From Sedili (my kampung actually), we rode another 40-45KM along the coastal rough tarmac plus few more climbs under the scorching hot sun to Desaru. We finally decided to go to Tg Balau to complete the ride. In total we cycled more than 320KM!!

Year 2012

I don’t celebrate new year. I don’t even celebrate my birthday. It is just a number. Scary ones in fact… :) But 2012 is for sure my cycling year. And the demise of my photography hobby…. What I did in 2012?

Screen Shot 2012-12-31 at 8.06.57 PM

That’s how I conclude my 2012 cycling activities. About 6600KM distance and over 25KM climb. Changed my bike from Madone 6.9 2010 to Colnago C59 2012. Sold of my Merida 96 half-carbon full suspension for a carbon tubular wheel set, of which I sold already. Now using latest SRAM Red and Bontrager XXX carbon clincher & DT Swiss RRC 46mm. I am not thinking of any other bike (unless there is new Colnago C60 in 2013 *grin*). Now…wish I could cycle more & further.

2012 is definitely not my photography year but I did manage to summit Mount Rinjani!
